O.k. pardon my ignorance but is Okinawa that place known for people living into their hundreds due to their lifestyle, diet, environment, etc.?

Thanks for the question. Yes, Okinawa is famous for having the longest living people in the world and after living here for almost three years I can definitely see why. Everything is done at a slower pace and much more thought and care is put into everything that is made and eaten. Also throw in the fresh sea air you can get almost anywhere on island and I can see why people her live well into their 100s.

I’m an American who’s been living in Tokyo since 1990… I have visited Okinawa a couple times. It’s nice … no train system like Tokyo though.
I like Okinawan cuisine!

Tokyo5. I am so glad to find another person that enjoys Okinawa cuisine. I have been to Tokyo and really love the different variations that you can find in Tokyo. I am actually planning a trip up to mainland soon. Any place in Tokyo you highly recommend that is kid-friendly?

You can find any type of food you like in Tokyo! There are so many different types of places that I enjoy…it’s difficult to recommend just one.
How old is your kid?
Have you ever tried Monja-yaki? It’s Tokyo’s original dish…kinda similar to Okonomiyaki (do you know (like) that?).
Most kids like Monja-yaki.
If you want “American” food…there are about four Hard Rock Cafes in the Tokyo area.

My daughters will be five and one in November. I have had okonomiyaki here on Okinawa and it is great. We would love to try the Monja-yaki. Do you know of a good place that is close to the New Sanno in Tokyo? And I didn’t realize there were 4 Hard Rock Cafes, we have only been to 1. Interesting.

Oh, New Sanno! It’s only for U.S. military, isn’t it? Exclusive! Is it nice?
There are many places to eat Okonomiyaki / Monja in Tokyo! But Tsukishima area is famous for it. It’s not so far from there. Near Ginza. (Do you know Ginza?)

Which one did you go to? Roppongi? When I first came to Japan, Hard Rock Cafe was still popular…and Japan only had that one in Roppongi in the entire country. Now, ironically (tragically), HRC isn’t so popular anymore…and Japan has four in and around Tokyo, two or three in Osaka, and a couple in other cities.
The ones in (near) Tokyo are: Roppongi (Tokyo), Ueno (Tokyo), Narita (Chiba (but their T-shirts say “Narita, Tokyo”)), and Yokohama (Kanagawa).

Daughters are great. The new Sanno is for military or military affiliated personnel living overseas. It is really nice, but hard to get into. We will have to try to make it to the Tsukishima area near Ginza to try the Monjayaki. Thanks for the location info. As for Hard Rock the one we went to was in Roppongi. We will have to see if we get anywhere near the others when we come up. I am a collector of the guitar magnets.
Aside from food is there any activities or sights you recommend we try to checkout while we are there? We plan to hit Disney again, and hope to try out the Ueno Zoo while we are there. aside from that we are trying to come up with fun stuff that would interest both U.S. and our daughters. Have you been to the Studio Ghibli museum? We thought about trying it out since we love the films.

I am a fan of the band KISS. A few years ago, the HRCs in Japan sold KISS / HRC-Japan collaboration pins. I bought a set of them.

When will you visit Tokyo? Did you see Odaiba? Tokyo Sky Tree? Ramen Museum? Anpanman Museum?

Ueno Zoo is fun. And there is a park, museums, and the Hard Rock Cafe nearby. There are other, bigger zoos with different animals in the Tokyo area too…but Ueno Zoo is the most conveniently located.

Nikko Edo-Mura (like “Old West” towns in U.S….but with ninja and samurai), Sanrio Puro-Land (Hello Kitty) in western (rural) Tokyo…
